I have to admit to not really understanding the workings of American politics……Presidential primaries and caucuses? Luckily these are now over as they are held in the January – June of the election year, i.e. earlier this year, so I don’t need to get my head around how they work. However, since the last US election, which captured the imagination of the whole world as it was the first time that a black Afro-American had stood for Presidential election and won, we in the rest of the world have been charmed by this handsome President and his beautiful, intelligent wife. However his own countrymen are not so enamoured because, whilst they put him on this saintly pedestal when they elected him and proclaimed him to be a ‘political Messiah’, he has failed to solve all the economic problems of the Western world and save us from this deep recession that we are all in.
It should be pointed out that no-one has managed to solve these problems, not Angela Merkel, David Cameron, sexy Sarkozy or the rest, and since it took previous administrations many years to put us all into this position then to get us out is going to take at least as many if not more years. However patience is not a characteristic that the ‘voter’ has much of and in this world of instant communication and instant entertainment, we seem to expect instant solutions.
Anyway I digress because it is the political jargon that I want to talk about…….what is a mugwump or a gerrymander? Apparently there is going to be a lot of ‘jawboning” and maybe the odd ‘boodle’ will swap hands but in the end it is all a load of ‘bunkum’! I have so much to learn about US politics! Are we sure that it is English that the Americans speak?
Though I may not understand it all if I had a vote in the US elections I would still vote for Obama because he looks like a man you can trust, he appears to have experienced the American Dream i.e. come from nothing, suffering hardships along the way to achieving the highest office in the land. Also Mitt Romney does not do it for me and I have no idea why? Is it that he keeps putting his foot in it, or his very privileged background or that he is a Mormon. No, I think it is because I am very shallow and I just really find Obama fit and I love (read ‘envious of’) Michelle’s muscly arms, her vegetable garden and that gorgeous Portugese Water Spanial, not to mention those beautiful daughters. They just look like normal people that you could have to supper who might even bring me some freshly grown organic vegetables! Clearly our own Queen felt so comfortable in their company that she allowed Michelle to do the previously unthinkable, put her arm around her shoulders in an affectionate manner.
Before all of our American readers send me emails complaining that I do not know what I am talking about, I want to say that you are so right because I don’t. However if there is any chance that Romney is going to be anything like the previous Republican President, George W. Bush II, then I would stick with what you have because at least you know where you are and there doesn’t have to be any time wasted with a changeover period.
However rest assured that I will be glued to Barack Obama’s speech that he will be making this evening to his Democratic supporters because I know we will be in for a good one!

Any president that comes from a monied family gives me the creeps, sorry. Pam
I agree but trouble is Romney can throw lots of money at the election and it will help to get him votes!
Maybe Obama should be buying lottery tickets!

Being American, I probably shouldn’t admit that I understand only a minuscule more than you about our politics. All that hot air, finger pointing at the other side, and the inevitable broken promises since it is not the people that elect our politicians these days, but rather the corporations pumping obscene amounts money into the anonymous super packs our elected officials will then be forced to pay the piper to, once elected. It both infuriates and bores me.
Having said that, I stand strong behind our president. I haven’t always agreed with how he has handled things, but given the circumstances he inherited, I feel he has done a relatively good job. We seem to overlook all the great things he has achieved while in office – healthcare reform is no small feat in the country where insurance is out of reach for so any, and medical costs have soared. I agree – it will take years to sort out our economy. I do feel he is a stand up guy, who happens to be very intelligent, fair, and committed. Personally, I love that there is an equally intelligent, strong woman by his side to keep him in check, and no doubt Michelle Obama speaks her mind – did you hear her speech? I reckon we could have had our first female president once she was done (if she had been running).
At least we know what Obama stands for. Does anyone, including Romney, know what Romney stands for? He changes his tune more often than he changes his underwear.
Now lets talk about the elephant in the room. While so many people whose tax dollars essentially bailed out the banks, airline, and car industries lose their homes, become food unstable, send their kids to over populated schools with fewer and fewer teachers – shouldn’t all that money being poured into an election be better spent as restitution to the American people? Economy sorted! Maybe I should run for president? Wonder if the country would notice when I painted the White House pink?
So happy to see that I am on the same page as an American! I agree let’s focus on what Obama has achieved. What a great team the Obamas are, I just feel safe knowing he is in charge of the US. Romney is like a horror movie where I am compelled to watch but it is with my hands over my eyes or my fingers in my ears so that I cannot see or hear all the ‘scary’ stuff.
And yes you should definitely run for President, the economy would be sorted and the WH would get an excellent makeover.
