Ok I cannot now ignore it, Christmas is officially around the corner and so I need to get mobilised. Unlike Grace I am going for the last minute approach and have been astounded at how prices are being slashed in an attempt to get us to part with our very hard-earned money.
Amazon is always a life support for me in these times as they are so reliable and cheaper than the shops and, for a small extra fee, you can have them gift wrapped and despatched to the person you are giving it to if you are not seeing them between now and the Big Day. Saves having to wrap it, find a box and go to the Post Office. All my local ones are run by very miserable and snappy people made more so at this time of year because of the volume of customers. So I have bought a wonderful fact book for my son’s housemaster, who is also an History teacher, and loves to be informed and share this knowledge with the boys – the more unknown the fact the better and this book will certainly fulfil this requirement.
It is abook, quite extraordinary in its richness and anecdotal detail, and it narrates the history of the British isles, its inhabitants and their prodigious achievements often at the furthest ends of the earth after immense hardship. In a series of short articles, there are facts in this book never before read about, and there is something new and strange on every page. I am hoping someone will buy it for me as I am loathed to have to wrap this one and give it away!I have also found a retro American popcorn maker which blasts the corn with hot air and so it is much healthier than using oil and perfect for those dvd days we are planning during the Xmas holidays!
A perfect combination with the box set of Downton Abbey! Can one ever have too much of a good thing?!
Keep watching our Amazon carousel (top right) for more ideas and do let us have some of your own that we can include – we need other ‘countrywives’ to recommend Christmas gifts so click on comments or email us at countrywives@virginmedia.com with your ideas please…..

What a lucky housemaster! If I were as lucky as him and had a lovely parent who could plainly see that from the width of my derriere that I really didn't need any more chocolate or that a bottle of vino isn't going to do my already addled liver any good, then I would be totally made up to receive such a lovely gift where a lot of thought went into choosing it. So,if we're talking books, I would be rather chuffed to receive The Primrose Bakery Book,Peggy's favourite cakes and cookies by Peggy Porschen or The David Nicholls collection three books set. Sadly it isn't going to happen, but a girl can dream can't she!
Popcorn and Downton Abbey? Doesn't get much better than that!
