Annabel: Cough, Splutter, sneeze….

Winter has arrived and I am full of cold that I cannot seem to get rid of. My heating has finally decided that the Aga cannot do it all and so it turns on in the early evenings. The garden has wholly embraced the bleak look and the weather men are talking of sub zero temperatures on their way….well it is the start of the second week of November so we cannot complain.
Downton finished on a low, leaving us all wanting more and wishing once again for maybe some Christmas cheer between Matthew and Mary under the mistletoe. Don’t know whether my children are more excited about Santa’s arrival or the 2 hour bumper edition of Downton on Christmas Day – 48 days and counting!!
Having said that I will miss Downton Abbey I am thrilled that the BBC Sunday 9 p.m. slot is being filled byGarrow’s Law, another period drama inspired by the life of William Garrow, a pioneering 18th century lawyer. I have a bit of soft spot for Andrew Buchan, who plays Garrow, who manages to make wigs and tights quite appealing on a man! So another period drama this time late 18th century London and a good filler until we can get another injection of early 20th century Downton Abbey and the inimitable wit of the Dowager Duchess of Grantham:

Lady Grantham:“Why would you want to go to a real school? You’re not a doctor’s daughter.”
Sybil:“Nobody learns anything from a governess, apart from French and how to curtsy.”
Lady Grantham:“What else do you need? Are you thinking of a career in banking?”
Cora:“Things are different in America.”
Lady Grantham:“I know. They live in Wigwams.”

Lady Mary Crawley:Sybil is entitled to her own opinions.
Dowager Countess of Grantham:No. She isn’t until she is married, then her husband will tell her what her opinions are.

Lady Grantham:“You are quite wonderful the way you see room for improvement wherever you look. I never knew such reforming zeal.”
Mrs Crawley:“I take that as a compliment.”
Lady Grantham:“I must have said it wrong.”
Lady Grantham:“So, that’s Mary’s replacement. Well, I suppose looks aren’t everything.”
Cora:“I think she seems rather sweet. I’m afraid meeting us all together must be very intimidating.”
Lady Grantham:“I do hope so.”
And so with that I am going to embrace the run up to Xmas, get all my presents bought and not be defeatist as, in the words of the D of G in last night’s episode, “do not be so defeatist, it is so middle class”

  1. I won't have a word said against Downton as is being written in newspapers at moment. The first series may have been better because it was new to us but this series has thrilled, amused, entertained me and everyone I know so roll on Xmas bumper and the 3rd series next year!
