Ellie: All those stiff clothes have paid off!

I mentioned a while ago that I was currently on a mission to save as much electricity as possible and as a result hopefully some money too, well have I got news for you!!!!
The electricity company called me for confirmation of our meter numbers, like many others we pay a pre-arranged guestimated amount every month by direct debit so every now and again they check the figures! For years the amount we have paid has been about right and occasionally we have owed money through underestimation. This morning however, for the first time in our married and singleton history, we received a credit of £163.00 from the electricity company………. A CREDIT!!
I am blown away…….absolutely stunned, obviously they haven’t send us any money but we are in credit, this surely can not be a coincidence?
I have been consistent over the last 3 months with the following: turning off ALL standbys at night (radios, stereos, TV’s etc…), only boiling the amount of water I need in the kettle (hugely expensive using the kettle), only boiling in saucepans with their lids on and I no longer use the tumble dryer..BUT.. to get the softness that tumble drying gives the clothes and sheets I do sometimes tumble dry for 3 minutes at the end of hang drying; I’ll get over that.
Went for a job interview yesterday to be a Saturday viewing lady for an local estate agency. They extolled that I was perfect for the job and how the staff had loved the way in which I had walked off the street the day before looking hopelessly for a job. So down to business they said, the pay would be £6 per hour from 9-5.30pm every Saturday, this would include a lunch hour but I wouldn’t get paid for that…! Most importantly I would be using my OWN car AND petrol to attend at least 12 appointments/viewings throughout the day! Oh and one more thing….they wanted a full and long term commitment to the company for at least a year, yeah right…on less than £6 p/h, minus petrol costs too!!!Girls, I may be the wrong side of forty but that sounds like proper advantage taking, so you’ll be glad to hear that on behalf of all intelligent, educated and previously well employed mothers I said “No thanks. I’d rather watch the children play in their matches on Saturday afternoons and stay forever poor thank you very much”.

P.S I have discovered, like Grace, that one can save vast amounts of water too….by just drinking wine.
