Today I have a cyber funeral to go to. I received a call last night from the local computer expert and the bad news is that my hard drive has finally “given up”… as he put it. Me and my computer “Vaio” (A Portuguese sounding name, declension accusative, feminine.. I think) have been through so much together! We have moved house no less than 4 times, we have sat hand in glove for hour after hour, year after year watching and listening to music, we have whooped with joy at school acceptances, bought a wide variety of houses, rather naughtily, digitally enhanced photographs, written traumatic, loving, excited and depressed emails, booked the glorious and the not so glorious holidays (wettest Norfolk on record ’08), watched Baby Gives the Evil Eyeon You Tubefar too many times, sourced the most economical Christmas presents on earth, E-bayed most of our possessions post recession, googled old friends and although at times our relationship has been strained and we have exchanged unkind words, I loved Vaio more than any other piece of equipment I have ever owned and I will miss her very much.
Goodbye Vi, it’s been such a blast, I just wish that you hadn’t crashed quite so fast!

P.S I must now look forward to a bright and happy future with eldest’s MacBook (A Scottish name, accusative and quite masculine sounding!).

Love your post – you are an excellent writer.Best wishes, Julie
